Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep examination about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple face the kind of problems that arise in any relationship over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
